A rare mahogany Regency barometer by J. and J. Gardner, Scotland, circa 1820
A beautiful and rare Scottish Regency mahogany stick barometer, by J & J Gardner, Glasgow. This early 19th century barometer has a visible/exposed glass tube and has an inset ivory scale calibrated in barometric inches with adjustable reading slide and with the usual observations, signed J & J Gardner, Glasgow. The arched trunk has a hinged front rectangular cistern cover. It is in superb condition considering it is 200 years old, a rare find indeed.
A brief note about the makers: J. and J. Gardner of Bell Street, Glasgow are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS & RETAILERS 1660-1900 as a partnership between John Gardner and his son of the same name from 1799 until the latter's death in 1818.
Condition: excellent, however we cannot guarantee the working condition of the barometer
