A lovely Art Deco burr walnut humidor by Dunhill, dating to the1930s. The rectangular humidor features a burr walnut veneer exterior with framed stringing on each panel and a chamfered edge, showcasing high-quality craftsmanship. The cedar-lined interior includes a humidifier in the inner lid, while a small square at the rear once held the original Dunhill maker’s plaque. The humidor comes complete with a working lock and key.
Founded by Alfred Dunhill, the company began in 1890 selling motoring accessories before expanding into luxury tobacco goods. By 1907, Dunhill opened a renowned tobacconist in St. James, offering tailored tobacco blends. His success led to expansion in New York and Paris in the 1920s, securing royal warrants and supplying figures like Winston Churchill. In 1924, Dunhill introduced the world’s first one-handed lighter, solidifying its place in luxury goods.
Walnut varies in tone from warm yellow-brown to deep brown, with distinctive grain patterns, while cedar is known for its durability and aromatic properties, ideal for cigar storage. Art Deco, emerging in France in the 1910s, became a defining style of the 1920s and 1930s, influencing architecture, fashion, and luxury objects. Today, it remains highly sought-after by collectors and design enthusiasts.
