A 'DS-11' modular sofa by De Sede, Switzerland, circa 1970
A beautiful vintage modular sofa by De Sede, Switzerland, made around the 1970s. This particular model is called the DS-11 and it consists of a 5-piece cream leather patchwork sofa which can be arranged in a large variety of combinations to quite literally suit any interior. Each module can be a stand-alone seat or can be placed adjacent to any other module to create whichever arrangement the owner requires. It really was a wonderfully versatile item of furniture, hugely fashionable today and with fantastic colour and patination. It is rare to find this colour, the sofa doesn’t absorb light and gives a superb retro look to any interior.
De Sede has its origins in a saddlery, which was founded in 1962 by the saddler Ernst Lüthy in Klingnau. His team specialized in leather furniture, made by hand. In 1965, the family business was transformed into a public limited company, de Sede AG. Designers of international stature were brought in to create the furniture and other production facilities opened, an international sales network was established. Through acquisition and innovative ideas, the brand became world famous.
