£3,795.00

An exceptional Swiss Black Forest walnut marquetry tilt-top table The shield form table top, with a marquetry inlay presenting superb examples of original pen-work, and carved apron supported by an intricately carved tripod base. What sets this pice apart from the rest is its enormous size. Most tilt-top tables from Brienz measure under 60cm across, with the vast majority of them around 50cm across. However this example measures a massive 120cm across, more than double the size of most of its kind. The inlay is exquisitely detailed with hunting scenes and animals typically found in the region. The carved apron and tripod base are also of incredible quality. With almost every inch of this huge table being either hand carved or inlaid, it is easy to imagine it as a standout item in any shop or home of the 19th century.

Defined by images of forest animals, forest trees, leaves, and branches, these items of furniture and carvings date back to the 1800s. These items of furniture and carvings were first made in the town of Brienz in Switzerland and by the end of the century, they had become the industry’s driving force. Soon, the world knew all about Black Forest furniture from Switzerland. These skilled group of people soon became a constant feature in a lot of international exhibitions with items featured in exhibitions in London, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Paris.

Condition: the table has been professionally waxed. The “click-clack“ clasp is probably an old replacement and not original. Overall the table is presented in excellent condition. Please refer to photographs.
