A palm tree lamp by Arturo Pani, Mexico, 1970s
A lovely palm tree floor lamp by Arturo Pani, Mexico, 1970s. This lamp captures the playful yet sophisticated spirit of his designs. Emblematic of Post-Modernist style, the lamp reflects the era's fascination with lush tropical motifs. The curved stems allow for a broad spread of light, while the silk "fronds" soften the illumination, turning this lamp into both a functional light source and a striking sculptural piece. It complements various design styles, from Art Deco and Hollywood Regency to 1950s and 1970s aesthetics, as well as more contemporary interiors.
The lamp features three reed-like stems made of dark lacquered metal, each adorned with brass accents mimicking natural reed joints and ending in pointed brass details. The fabric shades are carefully crafted with inner structures, wrapped in a cream silk on the outside and a lighter cream on the inside to enhance light diffusion. Trimmed in brass, these shades sit securely on brass holders, adding a refined touch to the naturalistic design. Anchoring the design, the stems emerge from a round brass base with a gently curved edge, highlighting the lamp’s luxurious yet earthy feel.
Arturo Pani (1915-1981), an influential Mexican interior decorator and designer, played a pioneering role in shaping Mexican modernism. His first major commission, the Hotel Reforma in Mexico City, marked the beginning of what would be known as the “Acapulco Look” – a style that blended Mexican artistry with modern luxury. Through his company, Studio Arturo Pani SA, he became a sought-after designer from the mid-century through the 1970s, establishing a legacy that continues to draw international collectors today.
