A "Soriana" armchair in dark brown fabric by Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, Italy, late 20th century
A lovely “Soriana“ armchair by Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, made in Italy around the latter part of the 20th century. Finished in a very rare dark brown colour fabric, it is lovely way to bring sophistication and elegance to any interior setting, working well with any room. An easy and practical way of bringing mid-century design chic to a home.
Initially released in 1969, the Soriana series is a characterful classic from the pantheon of modern furniture design. Shapely in form and beautifully finished in sumptuous beige leather, the sofa features an unorthodox frame structure which sees an element subtly exposed to the foot and rear of the sofa. The Soriana won the prestigious Compasso d’Oro prize in 1970, confirming its status as a real masterpiece of mid-century furniture design, gifting the piece with a legacy that sees it celebrated by design aficionados to this day.
Afra and Tobia Scarpa are an award winning postmodern Italian architect and designer duo. Their pieces can be found in museums across the United States and Europe, including collections in MoMA and the Louvre Museum. Known for collaborating with companies like B&B Italia, they worked with other well known firms like San Lorenzo Silver and Knoll International. They have won a number of awards such as the Compasso D’Oro in 1970 to the International Forum Design in 1992. Their design work consists of architecture and everyday household items including, furniture, clothing, interior design and art glass. They focused on the technical and aesthetic possibilities of materials in their designs. The couple was greatly influenced by Tobia’s father, Carlo Scarpa, a Venetian architect and designer.
