A rare "stirred, not shaken" cocktail shaker by James Dixon and Sons, England, circa 1930
A very rare “stirred, not shaken“ cocktail shaker made by the well renowned silversmith James Dixon and Sons. The famous phrase “shaken, not stirred“ became famous and synonymous with Ian Fleming’s novels (and films) featuring James Bond. However, not all cocktails should be agitated or shaken to the taste of Mr Bond. Many are best served stirred and this very unusual cocktail shaker does exactly that. The pump action mechanism ensures that the cocktail inside is not vigorously agitated, and this makes it one of the rarest and most collectible cocktail shakers in circulation today. It is made of electroplated silver (EPNS) and is offered in fabulous condition. Just as the prohibition era was lifted in the USA in 1933, it is easy to imagine the appeal behind these objects which would have made wonderful items to wow their guests. As relevant today as it was then, it makes a fantastic conversation piece and wonderful as part of a collection of barware in the modern home.
James Dixon and Sons was founded in Sheffield in 1806 and quickly became one of the major manufacturers of the industrial revolution. They were a major producer of pewterware, electroplated Britannia metal, silverware and electroplated nickel silver. Their registered trade mark since 1879 was a Trumpet with a Banner hanging from it. Although registered in 1879, the "Trumpet with Banner" logo was used at times before registration and appears on some of their silver plate pieces. They were one of the foremost names in EPNS and sterling silver tableware including silver tea services and hollowware pieces. They also made silverware serving pieces and had a wide catalogue of patterns. Their tea sets and hollowware pieces produced in silver are very valuable as antiques.
