A monumental antique late 19th century German solid silver-gilt lidded tankard, in the style of the early 17th century examples, beautifully chased and embossed with a very detailed grotesque masks, scrolls and foliage. The large and elaborate dragon shaped handle mounted to the side, holding the tankard with its claws, tankard standing on a trumpet shaped spreading foot and lid surmounted with a realistically modelled figure of a knight, holding a spear, seated on medieval watch tower. Hallmarked with German Hanau pseudo-marks, tested 900+ silver.
With the demand for antique style silver in the 19th century, Hanau silversmiths quickly found a market niche, which brought its silver manufacturers enormous prosperity and worldwide reputation, these silversmiths offered a wide range of highly decorative objects like neffs, tankards, coconut and nautilus cups, and other sumptuous sideboard pieces.
