A solid silver and antelope horn gimble table lighter by Thomas Whitehouse, London, 1900
A remarkable and distinctive piece, this late 19th Century Victorian silver and horn-mounted table "gimble" cigar lighter embodies the exquisite craftsmanship of its era. The large blackbuck antelope horn serves as a captivating focal point, adorned with a silver orb-shaped burner ingeniously mounted on a gimble swivel mechanism. This unique feature ensures that the light wick maintains an upright position, irrespective of how the lighter is passed or carried, providing both functional convenience and aesthetic allure. Supported by elegant solid silver details, this cigar lighter stands as a testament to the meticulous artistry and innovation characteristic of the Victorian era. The harmonious marriage of silver and horn, coupled with the thoughtful design of the gimble mechanism, elevates this piece beyond mere functionality, making it a captivating objet d'art that invites admiration and appreciation for the bygone craftsmanship of the 19th century.
The silver is stamped with the date letter “e“ for London, 1900. It is likely that this is the work of Thomas Whitehouse's firm, although of course, not of the man himself as he died on the 30th January 1898 and was buried on the 11th February at Abney Park Cemetery. Whitehouse specialised in the manufacture of silver dressing case and bag fittings. His business still continued and still used the 'TW' mark until Percy Horace Arthur Whitehouse entered a 'P.W' mark on the 25th October 1900. They were later styled as Whitehouse Brothers.
