A rare car trunk by Louis Vuitton in green Vuittonite canvas, France, circa 1910
A large and very rare Louis Vuitton car trunk covered in green Vuittonite canvas. Vuittonite is a stain and water resistant canvas that was used on Vuitton’s trunks from the turn of the century to 1920‘s. Car trunks were usually bespoke, made for the owner’s car and would ordinarily be positioned inside the boot of the vehicle or strapped to the back of the vehicle. As such, no two are the same, each one with slight variations. This one is a particularly good size but what sets this one apart is the very rare green Vuittonite canvas with which it has been covered. Usually car trunks are covered in black Vuittonite. It is understood that this is due to the fact that most cars produced around the turn of the last century were black and therefore the trunks (which would be often tied to the outside) would match the paintwork. Occasionally cars would be red, green or grey. It stands to reason that this is why Vuittonite canvas coverings for car trunks were produced in larger numbers in black and in much fewer numbers in red, grey or green like this one.
Complete with all its hardware and rivets stamped Louis Vuitton, it would make a great coffee table but could also be placed in a corner of a room as a bar or at the foot of the bed to store blankets. It’s a wonderful conversation piece, very elegant and understated.
