An Old Sheffield plated wine cooler, England, circa 1840
An Old Sheffield plated wine cooler, England, circa 1840
A beautiful and very rare Old Sheffield plate wine cooler. Old Sheffield Plate is the process of fusing a layer of silver on to a layer of copper. The process was discovered by Thomas Boulsover in 1742 and is highly sought after due to its rarity and age as it was superseded by cheaper electroplate in the early 1840's. This exceptional antique old Sheffield plate wine cooler has a tapering panelled flared form, ornamented with inset silver panels to both sides of each piece to allow engraving, a normal practice with many old Sheffield plate items. The rims have a flared shaped form and each wine cooler is fitted with two fine and impressive scroll decorated handles ornamented with exceptional leaf decorated terminals, each foot having a flared floral design. It also retain the original removable liner.
Condition: some wear to the highest points, very faint dents in places, otherwise good original overall condition
